I need a domke to carry a 70-200 f/4, nifty fifty, and the crappy 18-55

gripped 40d, but that will be out of the bag mostly. will the f6 or f8 work?

What's going to be on the 40D? One of the 3 lenses you list, or still another lens?

Take a look at the F3x, then. I haven't seen the F-8 live and in person, but the F6 would also work. The F3x will let you keep the camera vertically, though, even with the 70-200 on it. There's room in either side pocket for a flash (in its case, should you want it on), a water bottle, or a guide book and the front pocket will easily take cards, batteries, lens cleaning stuff . . .

i was going to get the f3x, but i want the waxed bag, which is twice the price of the f6 or f8, and i just need an inexpensive bag quick-like.

i just need a bag to throw those few things in and go

Well, it's only $40 list more than the F-6 Ruggedwear; or were you planning on getting the classic canvas F6? The F-8 doesn't come in wax AFAIK, only the F-803 which I wouldn't recommend for carrying a gripped body (too thin).

classic ruggedwear(60-66 bucks)

is there another domke aside from the f-6 or 3x that you would suggest?

The F2 would be overkill, the F802 isn't suited for a gripped body any more than the F803, the only other possible I could see is the F4AF. It's so close to the F3x in size that I haven't gotten one. The F3x is my favorite for a body and a couple of lenses; the F6, which I also have, just doesn't do a lot for me.

The F4-AF will be very snug with a gripped body. Without the grip it would take what you want with extra room.

Domke J3 is always a good alternative to the F4-AF but it is the opposite of the waxed canvas, being ballistic nylon.

I've fit a 1DII with body cap in the large compartment of the F4-AF just fine. It's snug but in a good way--don't have to force it in (slides right in) but there's very little play once it's put in there. F4-AF would fit everything the OP wants very well I think.

the one downfall of the F6 is the narrow shoulder strap compared to all the other models avail.

You can still put the Domke Post Office Pad on it . . . I wouldn't have any shoulder bag (from any manufacturer) without one.

the problem with the f6 is it isn't tall enough for the 70-200 if you store it upright.

Okay, if you insist. At least he has been warned. I cannot fit a 40D gripped with my 3 lenses in there. I can force it but it really makes it difficult to work out of.
