Coming from the 1D Mark I and Mark II camera, I bought the Mark III to excel at night time cycling photography. The 1D Classic has a lot of noise over ISO 640, and the Mark II's ISO noise threshold I was comfortable with was ISO 800. Last night was the first outing I had with the mark III at night. I must say, it performed rather well. When it got pitch-black out, obviously I had trouble focusing in AI-Servo mode (as you all may or may not know the Speedlight IR assist beam does not work in AI-Servo AF, only one-shot AF). I did try to focus on moving subjects with one-shot AF. As soon as the IR-assist beam got a lock, I fired. The results were actually o.k. (as long as they weren't moving too fast). If they were, the split second it took me to trip the shutter after I heards the AF confirmation beep, the subject moved out of focus. Anyways, here are some photos of some of the keepers I got in the dark (on a positive note, my keeper rate was still 80% AT NIGHT in AI-Servo with the Mark III).
