I was shooting football last night and the shutter would not fire and "err 99" came up on the top display. I switched the camera off and on several times and kept trying before it finaly started working again.
Any Ideas.
I am thinking about sending it in before Basketball season starts for me and using my back up for now.
Thanks for any input
Frank

Sounds like your shutter is on its way out. I had a similar problem off and on a month before my shutter finally broke.

err 99 is an error code that all Canon EOS digital cameras throw when the camera does not really know what is wrong and could really be anything and does not necessarily mean that the shutter is going bad.

Try gently cleaning your lens and body contacts with an eraser head and see if the issue persists.

If it does, a trip to Canon may be the best and only thing if you need to depend on that body for shooting.

One Err99 is not a sign the camera is failing... My 20D gave an Err99 a couple of years ago and it's still working fine and has never done it again...

Way too much has been read into what is really a catch-all error code...

I have to agree with this. Err99 is a bit of a "catch all" code. I too had this some years ago with a 20D fitted with a grip and removing and re-fitting this seemed to cure it. Obviously that's not the case here with a 1DIIN but it really does seem to be a bit of a "generic" error code. It certainly can't harm anything to clean the lens contacts with an eraser though as that seems to be the most common fault I've seen reported. It may be a sign of something more serious but I wouldn't worry too much just yet.

I get Error 99 if trying to use old Sigma lenses. Happens on several bodies. There really are no easy answer to what the case of an Err99 is.

Thanks I will try cleaning the sensors but last night it threw the code and I could not get to operate again. After I clean them and check it I will go from there and see.
Thanks for the input.

If it locks up totally Frank, try removing both the main battery and also the backup battery (is this a CR232?) and leave it for a couple of minutes for any charge to leak away, then re-install them. Do be aware that this will lose any custom settings and you'll also have to re-enter time and date settings too. It's not a cure but sometimes kicks things back to normal. Of course if it's locked up anyway you don't have a lot to lose :(

Hope it gets sorted soon

cheers
Bill

It isn't the sensor you have to consider cleaning. It is the gold connectors for the lens. But that is only if the error is because of communication problems with the lens. Hhave you tried different lenses, by the way?

I cleaned the pins on the camera and the gold contacts on my 300 2:8 and it seems fine for now. I tried it before I went to work and when I got home I fired off a few frames. Before I cleaned anything I did try several lenses with no luck so I hope this keeps me going.

Thanks for all the help
Frank
