Any of you familiar with the Sigma 18-50 with optical stabilizer? Wondering if it's better than the Sigma 17-70.

Sigma's 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 OS is pretty new. Don't think many have had a chance to try it yet. But if you're spending the money already, you should go for a f/2.8 lens. Save for a few stellar exceptions in the line none of the variable aperature lenses are all that good, including the 17-70.

Don't know much about the OS 18-50, but I would agree with nureality that you probably want this one (external link).

Yeah, that's a good lens I'm sure. I'm torn between the Tokina 12-24 ATX, the Sig 17-70, or one of the Sigma 18-50 lenses.

Our opinions of the 17-70 sure vary. I always liked mine (had one for a Sony A200k that I sold a while back). I even think the cheapo Sigma 18-50 DC is a good lens and under rated, at least for the type of use I need one for. I think the 17-70 gets an 8.5 rating at Miranda site, which is far from poor. Tokina 12-24 gets a 9, as do many L lenses that cost many times more.

I've got a Sigma 70-300 DG non APO that's really sharp and I'm keeping it. I don't know if it's just a good copy or what but am pleased with it.

I tend to take reviews with a grain of salt. I know I asked, and thanks for replying, even though. I've had many lenses and some were good, some not so good copies.

I like my 17-70 a lot. It is a very capable lens. But, I am not thrilled with the variable aperture and one of these days will replace it with the Canon 24-70. It wouldn't be fair for me to compare the two given the extreme spread in cost between the two.

I agree. I was going to get the 18-50 with the OS, but since I couldn't find a single review on it, I ended up with the sigma 18-50 2.8 EX DC Macro like in the link above. I've had it for a few months and it is a very impressive lens for the money, especially macro.

You might talk me into getting the 18-50 EX. :D

I *may* get an L lens someday but not right off. I haven't studied L lenses much so I'm not even sure which one I'd get if I could afford one.
