Hi all first time poster. I am looking for a portrait lens around $500. My current lens lineup consists of a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, and a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, and a Canon 100-400.
I currently have a Canon 40D body. Any suggestions ?

Are you more interested in getting full body shots? head and shoulder shots? Depending on length, either the 50 1.4 or 85 1.8

I would recommend the 85 1.8 too. Excellent portrait lens.

What do you find lacking in either the 17-50mm or 70-200mm lenses?

Nothing. I plan on keeping both of those... I love the tamron as a landscape lens. I want a prime for portraits.

What do you hope a prime will do for your portraits that your current lenses do not?

What focal length have you used most for portraiture?

I say either the 85 1.8 or 28 1.8 depending on what kind of portraits you do. Primes are definitely the way to go for portraits

85 if you do head/shoulders-half body
28 if you do 3/4-full body

NADA...sold off my gear and bought a motorcycle. I might be back shooting someday...

Canon 60mm f/2.8 macro makes an excellent 'portrait' lens on a crop body like the 40D, and guess what... It can also be used for macro shooting :-)

Depending on how much room you have indoors and what sort of portraits you intend shooting, the 85mm may be a bit long.
