Terrible lighting, and high iso

It would be nice to shoot a well lit field one time, but this is awesome practice.

6400 iso, 1/400th, f 2.8

and a lot of pp.

I've tried a flash a little, but don't like the results too much. Parents really don't know how much work goes into taking these pics.

I'm the same way...not really a fan of flash, although I will keep trying it. I have to shoot 6400 every game because our field is so awful. And its not evenly lit at all; tons of dark spots throughout the field.

You did a good job; the image looks great for ISO 6400.

that's about as good as it gets for non-flashed HS football with poor lighting. Nice job. With the high ISO provided by camera's it's not about getting enough light to expose, it's more (for me, at least) about the lens/camera not having enough light to focus accurately.

Our local team played at home Friday night on their nicely lit field. After shooting a few away games, I can honestly say ours is by far the best-lit I've seen this season. Next week's field is a nightmare. I probably won't shoot. So bad that 4 stategically placed pickup trucks with high-beams on would provide better lighting than what is currently available! Ugh!

It's funny, I sell these pics for $2.00 apiece. I give away 90x more than I sell.

I had a couple of Mom's tell me a picture isn't worth that kind of money and that they were going to get their own camera and start taking pictures.

They went out and bought a camera, and did take pics walking up and down the fence with their camera.

They turned out being my best customers, lol. I still give them lots more than they buy.

I try and tell everyone, I'm not taking pics for the money, I LOVE THE HOBBY!

I wish I had enough disposable income where I could buy a Mark III just so I could give away work and call it a "hobby".

I have friends that have Bass riggs, friends that hunt, and hey, I have a couple that have motorhomes and campers, which they don't even use.

All of those cost more than a 1d mark iii.

Honestly, when I retire, I'd like to do this on a semi professional (maybe professional) level.

All you guy's and gals out there, keep things in your own perspective. you can still have family fun and have what you want. It may just cost a little.

Giving work away goes past your own personal amusement. It does a disservice to photographers that take their work seriously, and rely on it for income. People become accustom to expecting free photography, and it's cheapening the trade across the board. But, as you've pointed out, that kind of money isn't an issue for you, so I don't expect other peoples money would either.

What part did you miss! My work is hardly professional. I don't think what I do would reflect on your business, and money is valuable to me, believe me.

I didn't know you had to be a professional to take pictures and have fun!

No, I'm "one of those" with a 40D that took the time and the effort to learn my craft, and take my work seriously. I also happen to deal with other "photographers" that compete with me for space, who just plan on giving their shots away, and only happen to be there because having a camera gets you closer to the action than actually buying a ticket.

Before I start making money as a business, I want to perfect what I'm doing, and I can promise you it'll happen.

Oh, by the way....I take pics for a local high school! Every now and then another photographer will show up from another team, but believe me, I don't think a thing about it.

I'm a little different than you; I'll give photographers the shirt off my back to help them, even at a game.

I don't get mad about what others have, I mind my own business, and make the best of life.

Besides, a camera doesn't make a photographer.

I don't get your logic. What about people who do voluntary work in the community. Are they under-cutting other people's jobs because the do it for free?

There's no law written in stone that says only a pro can own a 1D or a Nikon D3. And it's still a free country - if he wants to give it away, he can.

That is a great way to look at it. I am a hobbyist with a 50D (eyes on a 7D).

Dont sweat the other guy. I made a comment in another forum about getting experience as a wedding second shooter one time. I inquired if working as a second for free was the right approach. You would of thought I kicked a puppy. So many photographers were coming at me with "if I had to ask I wasnt ready" and how weddings are "single moments you dont get second chances"....it was really kind of ridiculous. Completely unsupportive and offered very little real advice (except for a couple).

You do whatever you want. No one says it cant be a hobby....expensive or not. If you want to give prints free, then fine. If you want to pay them to take them, then thats fine too.

I look at this as someone simply building a portfolio of experience. Its not like you are going to the "Smith-Miller wedding" and selling your work.
