I think it might be worthwhile for owners of this lens to occasionally check those screws to make sure they're tight. I know I will be doing it with mine.

The screw threads look pretty chewed up. Would not surprise me if someone at Canon claimed customer abuse. Agree that inserts would be best and considering what the lens cost. When you get the new part, be carefull not to over-torque. With cracks at multiple sites, that was most likely a contributor here. The cast Al really doesn't like to be overtorqued. Use some Locktite (not the perm. type)

I've never seen that before, and it's damn scary.

All the more reason to upgrade with an aftermarket foot I guess!

Still use them 4 screws with aftermarket foot.I have a feeling they have been pulled down to tight. Mine is ok and I have never seen this before.

I'm sorry I'm so dense, but can you show a picture not so close up. I'm not understanding what part broke. Is that part of the monopod or a piece of the original/replacement lens plate that broke?

I don't have anymore pictures unfortunately because the lens is at Canon at the moment.

The part that broke is the part of the tripod collar that the foot screws into.
