Has anyone here that owns a 7D used it to shoot figure skating? Ice hockey would be a close second I guess so if anyone has hockey examples I would appreciate those too. Thanks in advance.

Good question...

I certainly would like to know that myself as my primary business is sports photography and specializing in Figure Skating. I currently have a 50D and looking to pickup my second Body and trying to decide between the 5D MKII or the 7D.

I also started dabbling in Glamour/Pin-up (ala Gil Evgren/Vargas style...Vintage basically) and plan to expand into that has the other half of my business. So knowing which of the 7D or the 5D MKII to handle both jobs will determine where I drop my money.

I think figure skating would also require a faster lens. So if your (OP) sig is correct, you'll need something better than the 24-105L. Well, not necessarily "need," but greatly benefit.

f/2.8 is the standard for figure skating.
With the 7D you can go to ISO12800 so, f/4 would also work (no, just kidding ;) ).

But the 7D is great for FS, you have a lot more functions of manipulating the AF than on the 50D/5D² (even more than on the 1D³ :D). But Canon recommends to use the default settings on the 7D (1D³) for FS.

The AF of the 7D will flash you away, it's incomparable to the 50D!

Apersson850, Did you should those pictures with the 7D and the 70-200 2.8 non-USM?
What was your ISO? Great pictures. Thanks

I think you'll need a 70-200 f/2.8. With IS the better.
Figure skating is really.... crazy; especially when you try to take a picture during triple luts & jumps. its quite fast.

I would say that it is just about as good as my former 1dm2 in daylight, although in poor light it is better than the 1d2 because of how usable ISO 3200 and 6400 are. I've never used a 1d3, but I suspect most of its owners would say it is better than the 7d (albeit at twice the price).

I've used the 7D to take short track speed skating photos and it has done a pretty good job. My typical settings are 1/320 f2.8 iso 1600 for a well lit arena. I still need to bump things up in post typically by 1/3-2/3 of a stop.

The 7D shines in its ability to shoot high speed bursts. The high burst rate helps significantly with your timing for getting the athletes in the best body positions. iso1600 is fine as long as you can nail your focus, otherwise it gets extremely soft. Short track isn't much of an AF torture test because the competitors are moving in a predictable manner, but it's difficult to get the face in sharp focus. The AF has done a fine job when I've snapped the camera around to catch crashes. Everyone always looks at the camera when they crash. :D

Which would you prefer for shooting sport photos, the 7D or the 5DMkII?

If I had a choice between the two, 7D hands down.

I've found ISO 3200 to be quite usable on the 1D Mk II in figure skating as long as you expose to the right.

Is the 17-55mm lens better or the 24-70mm?
