Well I have bought myself a new 24" Mac.. and I am just blown away by it.

So the real question is.. do I buy Aperture or not?

I have used DPP and CS2 for so long on PC, I just want to do something ( better ) or just different.

Pros and Cons on Aperture for Mac?
Can it edit Raw files like DPP?

Easy controls?

LR2 has great photoshop integration, Aperture has none. LR2 over Aperture any day, but download the trials for both and see what you like.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Yes download the trials. But be aware that apple does things differently. Watch the tutorials and read the manual. What feature you want may be there, but is more intuitive and less PC like.

There are two principal apps (other than DPP) for raw editing and DAM on Macs: Aperture and Lightroom. You should download both and see which you prefer. Personally, I prefer Aperture over LR.

Pros and Cons on Aperture for Mac?

Biggest pro is that it uses the gpu for image processing and integrates with the OS very well. The two problems are external edits by other integrated software (e.g., Photoshop, Nik) are returned as bitmapped images to Aperture and not as raw edit files and (2) Apple can be slow to get new camera raw support.

Can it edit Raw files like DPP?

Better.

Easy controls?

Well, I guess that's up to the individual. I think Aperture's a breeze to use, but I've been using it for about 3 years now.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Usually "intuitive" and "read the manual" don't jive well together, in fact, they are usually mutually exclusive. I guess they really do do things differently ;)

For Mac of course.

Many people use Aperture or Lightroom with Photoshop. They are two different types of apps that complement one another, but have some overlap in features. However, since buying Aperture, I rarely use Photoshop. Only when I need layers or some of the creative filters of Photoshop do I use it, which is pretty rare. You should download both Aperture and Lightroom demos and try them out. Each has things about them that you will like or dislike, but it really comes down to personal preference. For me, it's Aperture + Nik Suite (and on occasion Photoshop or Pixelmator).

Oftentimes you can trade in your PC-version for a Mac version. Contact Adobe.

I use LR2. Tried Aperture and it was really slow on my '08 MBP. The Loupe would lag nomatter what.

edit: maybe only if you were using CS4?

Agree with most....download the trial version of Aperture and LR and test for yourself. It will all come down to workflow, one will fit you better.

All I can say is, ouch!

To OP:
In agreement with the others, you'll have to download the trials. Since you are familiar with editing RAW from your DPP experience, you should be able to gauge pretty quickly if either LR or Aperture fits your workflow... or if you feel you'd be better served staying with DPP.

^ That's whack. I remember reading somewhere you could do a straight trade. I thought "That sure is awesome of Adobe". But I think it had to be the same version (latest).

With LR2, there's no worry about that, cd keys work for both Windows and OSX versions.

Yep, download the trial versions. I have the same computer as you. Aperture ended up being useless. Constant lock ups, black images, red images, file not supported errors (with jpegs no less), slooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwww. It worked OK for about a week until I started editing many images. Vault never worked properly, preview and thumbnail generation took fooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvvvvvvvverrrrr.
And never really did finish. It seemed like it was always doing something.

Go to the Apple forums and look for these issues. Aperture is really buggy. Oh, and I installed it on a brand new machine that has no issues with ANY other programs including photoshop elements and bridge.

I just downloaded the trial version of LR. MUCH faster, image adjustments are faster, easier, better. All the presets available are great. Exporting is easier and more intuitive and again easier. I'll be buying LR, not Aperture.

Snap -I've also just moved from a 15" PC Laptop to iMac 24 - what an awesome screen
I used Lightroom and PSE 7 on the PC. Lightroom transferred onto Mac with existing serial but not PSE7 as this was PC only. I've just downloaded the trial version of PSE 8 which I'm pleased to see now uses Bridge as the organiser. I may move to this instead of Lightroom. I don't take vast numbers of shots so I don't really benefit from the Lightroom workflow but found I needed a better catalogue than PSE7 provided. It may be that PSE 8 will meet my needs.

Best advice is as others have said, download the trial versions and see what suits your style.

Enjoy the new Mac

Get LR2 it's fantastic.

Don't even bother with Aperture.
