well, i've begun the process. called canon tech support this morning. they seemed pleasant enough. dang, there's a lot of hoops to jump through to send this thing back..... writing up a letter with all sorts of information, including desc of the work i need done, a CD with sample images showing the problems, copy of sales receipt, copy of warranty card.... at least they're giving me a prepaid ups label to use.

so far, so good. let's see how this goes. hopefully the last three digits for canon's tech supp phone number aren't intentional.

Good for u !
Hope u'll find the much better lens from what u've gotten.
Same problems happen in my country, Indonesia. Lots of pgraphers here complaining about the IQ of 24-70L.

Wow, this is so crazy. To do this many tests to see if the lens is working correctly. Think of all the bad copies of lens out there for those unwilling (or unaware) to go the extra 10 miles.

yeah, this is the first lens i had ever done any testing on (i've since checked my other lenses, and none of them seem to have this issue). most likely cuz i spent 2 months prior to buying it researching lenses, trying to figure out which one suited my needs best, etc, and i was fully aware of the bad copy issues with the 24-70 (which kept me from taking the plunge for a good portion of those 2 months.... didn't want to deal with the hassle of trying to send it back, return it to a dealer, send in to canon, etc). from what i've seen, if you're lucky to get a sharp copy, it's a crazy good lens, but i've read of some folks going thru 4 copies before finally winding up with a good one.

as of yesterday, hadn't yet received the free ups label from canon. called them back yesterday around noon asking them about it, apparently they wrote down my email address wrong. sheesh. another 4 days lost (yes, i'm getting impatient to finally get to use this lens.... fall colors are quickly fading). for some reason, even though they fixed the issue yesterday, they said not to expect the email to arrive until late today or more likely tomorrow sometime. ??? whatever. i'll be stopping by ups tonight to grab a box and figure out what i have to do to get things under way with them. i picked up a crapload of bubble wrap the other night.... i'm gonna encase this expensive piece of glass in about 5 inches of bubble wrap. lol

hopefully it doesn't come back in 1/2" thick bubblewrap.

well, my 24-70 is back, safe and sound in it's nice little lens pouch, in my canon backpack. just came home today. the letter from canon, included in with the lens, confirms my suspicions......
".... it was found that the part was not properly connected, causing rear focus. The collar was replaced and product functions were confirmed."
sweet. no time to play with it tonight or do any testing to verify the fixin', but thanks to all who helped me in identifying the issue and developing a gameplan for resolving it. much appreciated. :)

Just finished reading entire post. I just ordered this lens and can't wait to see how your pictures come out now. And I hope I get a good copy of the lens.
