My laptop was struggling with HD, but when I downgraded to the newest drivers the laptop manufacturer was giving it worked well.

VLC is much slower in my opinion and you never have to worry about codecs cause TheKmplayer includes tons of codecs in the program. It wont install them into your system so it wont gargble up tons of resources. Also try quicktime before you try anything else.
