I am looking for the lightest and least expensive tripod to beat up. It will get scratched against rocks, have brush scraped past it, etc. It needs to hold up to a 40D w/ a 100-400mm lens. I have a nice Manfrotto that I do not want to take on hikes (too heavy and too expensive).
So far Adorama's FlashPoint looks to be the best suggestion. I am hoping for under 3-1/4# and under $150. I am looking for the legs only. I already have a head. I would like at least 58-60" in height.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!!

Check out the Feisol line up. I don't thing there is another budget brand that can compete with them. I have one of their older tripods & both of their monopods & am very pleased with them.

Weifeng/Fancier makes a nice CF tripod. (FT6824T)

Just add a good ballhead!

Look at the Benro Travel Angel in carbon fiber. Made in China, and like Feisol, kind of a Gitzo knock off without Gitzo's features and lifetime warranty. Both are warrantied for three years, when I suspect something will happen to them. But they will probably give you good service til then, as others here have pointed out.

Unfortunately, they are each twice what you want to pay. To get something light and inexpensive, you will sacrifice stability.

+1 Benro Travel Angel

Check out the C-068M8 (external link) Legs. As long as you use a good ballhead, it will hold your 100-400. However it is a few inches below your required minimum height and has some vibration which is the trade off for it is light and short when folded.

How about a Dolica carbon fiber: How about this: http://www.amazon.com …ics&qid=1255494884&sr=8-2 (external link)
I don't have the exact tripod but I have the aluminum version (which is only $50). It seems well made and solid enough for what you're looking for.

Also have a look at the Giottos range of CF tripods, in particular the MT8350.

A big thanks for all the suggestions. Some of these cost $300+ and I was looking for one I would not feel guilty beating up. The Weifeng/Fancier looks perfect and the price is right. I might just give that one a try.
Thanks again to everyone!!!

A big thanks to TeamSpeed. I ordered the Weifeng/Fancier per your suggestion. Between Bing and Ebay bucks it was under $70. You can't beat a CF tripod under 3# for that price. I'll let everyone know what I think after it arrives.
Thanks again to everyone!

It was a buy it now auction w/ 8% Bing Cash Back. I just went thru Bing, searched for "CF tripod", clicked on the 8% Ebay link, and then chose the auction I already wanted. As long as you click thru Bing you can still go to your MY EBAY page and purchase any auction in your watched list.

Ebay bucks is by invitation only. I assumed everyone was invited. It gives me a percent back on all my Ebay purchases over a 90 period. Then, it automatically credits my next purchase. You have to use Pay Pal to pay for everything. I had almost $20 in Ebay bucks to spend. I think this is the third or fourth 90 day period I have collected Ebay bucks.

Don't forget to add about 6-9" for ballhead and camera. I don't remember what model I ended up with, but it does go a little taller than this.

Great point. I must admit I was getting a little nervous!
