Got some stuff at this one that I really like. Lighting was all over the place but at one point the mix of clouds and sun created some fantastic shadows to work with. After my weak football showing recently, I hope these redeem me somewhat. Crit always welcome.

1. VERY overcast at the start

2. then the sun began to peak through

3. then the shadows began their magic and the way the light filtered through the clouds was simply awesome

What is up with the girls in the first? Don't tell me they are in high school. These all look good. I like the light and the crowds in the background. Did you ever get your body looked at? How is your daughter liking this? I was going to go out this evening and shoot some XC but rain is coming in and didn't fill like dealing with it. Aren't you glad you still have your 300 2.8 now?

Thanks Danny, thanks Dave. Those girls in the first are all 7th graders. Bay has a great program from middle through high school (the kid in #3 is an 8th grader whose older brother is nationally ranked). For my daughter, its been one of the best things ever for her. She couldn't run half a mile before this season and now does 4-5 mile hill workouts and is moving up in the bunch every week. She's no speed demon but she's fit and she's feeling great about herself which can be such a struggle for a young woman nowadays. Her coach deserves so much credit as she does an amazing job in bringing out the best in each kid on a really personal level.

Body wise, I did the firmware reload and all seems well (hopefully these shots demonstrate that somewhat). And yeah, I'm glad I kept the 300 right now (even those these are all the 70-200).

Image wise, I went for some different crops on some as you can see. I really wanted to give a feel for being on course with the athletes so rather than isolating them in every images, I really tried to bring everything in a bit. The lighting was just dumb luck of being there so I spot metered the brighter jerseys then underexposed about another 1/3 to give some better shadows (which on my MkII means, meter right on the middle line since the camera tends to slightly underexpose).

Anyway, thanks again guys. After the beating on the football stuff, I needed something to feel a little better about.

Ahh I need to install an exif viewer on my laptop. I rarely use my 70-200 but I may have to break it out again after seeing these. Have you tried the 300 after your firmware install? Maybee it is the lens because these all look spot on.

I started trail running and I'm liking it. Haven't had a lot of time for cycling.

I shot some soccer with the 300 and it seemed pretty good as well. maybe it really was the firmware.

trail running is awesome....as long as you have two wheels under you, wait, that's mountain biking!
