Hey all.
Well, I have been asked to shoot 4 team shoots this season. And while my confidence is high for the quality of the shoot...I don't feel comfortable yet with a set up. I have 4 teams. 3 teams with 12 players, 1 team with 22 players.
I will be shooting around 4pm, sun 1/3 down but should not be a concern. Teams will be in front of slightly fall tree setting out of the sun.
Question: I need help with setting up the 22 players. I thought 3 rows: 9 in back, 7 middle and 6 kneeling in front? Shooting at f12 or so at middle row with my 17-55. I also thought about shooting slightly elevated for the 22 player shot?
If you have some examples or links to examples that would be great.
Thanks all

Unless someone wants to chime in......with samples...I found a great read HERE: https://photography-on-the.net …hread.php?t=392779&page=3

There is no way a single 430 and Ezybox will light a 12 or 22 person team. Go rent a couple of strobes and umbrellas and you will do fine. The rental will only cost about $25 a day. At least that is what is costs around here.

I was afraid of this. I shot a few team pics before....as a favor and they turned out decent.
I do not know of any rental camera rental places around here, let alone decent camera shops. The 2 RITZ stores I recall are gone.

Most online lens rental shops offer lighting kits as well.

I use Lensrentals.com but feel free to search through the many results you can get with a google search for "lens rental" or check out this review article that compares a few shops:

Your in Dallas? Give Ramsey a call at Competive Camera in Dallas. He will take care of you. You also might try Camera Stop in Plano although I prefer Ramsey.

If you do use the 430 only get rid of the ezybox thing

i thought about this after I wrote it.....Probably would be to diffused and not enough light. I can pick up another flash real quick and have a tripod in 2 days. 1 flash on left side and 1 flash on the right.

I would suggest doing 7-8-7 . If you read into the tread you posted to like page 5 i think I show examples of how I would go at it. Having the first row sit, second row kneel so they are in between the heads of row in front and the last row stand in between the heads of row in front them. I have done many of team shots this way and only used one 580EX. There is no need to be at f12 for depth of field reasons. At f8 and 24mm lens and you focus on a subject 13 feet away you have depth from 6ft to infinity.

thank you kindly. Also thought about f12....and with my backdrop being natural. I will try and stay at f8 or less for some isolation. My largest concern I guess was how far away I needed to be to obtain a quality 5x7 crop! I will be using my 17-55 IS and due to this thread....maybe picking up paint shop pro for artistic additions.

Get a piece of twine about 15 feet long and tie a 16 penny nail at each end, and one in the center. Stretch that across in a straight line. Set your camera on a tripod and center it to the middle nail and aline this string up with any horizontal lines in the background. Will you have coaches in the pictures as well? You need to base your count on the total number of people in the picture. Give me a total count and I will give you the perfect number for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rows. Line the players up shortest to tallest, and fill your rows with the shortest person in that row in the center, with the tallest players in each row to the outside, Think of a "U" and not a pyramid. The front row should be sitting, the second row kneeling, and the back row standing.

You can't properly light this with an oncamera flash. Rent 1 if not 2 Norman 400b's to do it properly. Feel free to look at some of my galleries for ideas.
