After rereading my post, I don't think I made myself clear. The string is for lining up the team, you don't place your tripod on it. You should give yourself enough room so that you are shooting as close to 50mm as possible.

RSB Senior Member 317 posts Likes: 3 Joined Oct 2009 Location: Carlsbad, CA More info | It depends totally on how much sunlight, but still, a pair of 580's on stands probably won't be adequate, certainly not enough if you are going to backlight the group, which I find preferable. I normally use a pair of Norman 400b's for my groups, at full power (400ws each). I'm normally working in full sunlight, so f11@1/250th, and I want the strobes to be putting out a full f11 if I am backlit, or about f9 if I am front or side lit. Calumet has a great rental dept, and will ship drectly to you. I don't know what they offer in the way of battery powered strobes, but the Normans, or a Lumedyne would work great. You can actually get a single Lumedyne that with modules will pack up to 2400ws, although a single Lumedyne with 800ws would more than suffice. Randy Brister, Cr.Photog.
