We ran into a coyote just like that in Cades Cove in the Smokies last year but at the time all I had with me was a 55-250 and I couldnt get any good shots. We're going again next week and this time I rented a 100-400 and a 1.4 TC....hopefully that will get me in close enough for some great shots.

I bought this lens to take with me to Yellowstone. It fits my needs well. It is a great lens, good range for taking wildlife shots, pretty sharp, excellent build quality, and the stabilization works well. The Sigma is a bit big & heavy, and the OS is kinda noisy. You can't beat it for the money.

It's on a crop body (450D/XSi). I also had my eye on the 100-400 IS for some time, but it's almost double the price of the Bigmos, and the Sigma is 100mm longer. Even the 500mm is sometimes still not long enough for wildlife shots. I'd recommend get the 150-500 if you need that extra reach. I got my Bigmos from abe's of maine for $900
