Hi everyone, I have cracked 10K images on my 50D tonight (ok, I like to push that button!) and discovered as it clicked over IMG_9999 it has made a new dir called 101Canon and started from 0001 again......?? And iImage 10K is actually called IMG_0001.

Is this something I can change or am I stuck with starting again, which makes it tricky as I use the image number to find the originals of ones I have modified so if people want copies etc, I get them to refer to the image number of the one they want.

BTW, no issues whatsoever with the camera although the sensor could do with a bit of a clean. Only one err99 and that was with the nifty 50 fitted and it was only once. Turned off and on and all gone

This is normal on all digital cameras. Has to do with "standards". Obviously outdated in the digital age and cheap flash memory.

Your only recourse is to use a program to rename them once they are on your PC, which is what I do using a small freebie program called, cleverly, "Renamer".

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Actually, you could use a program like Downloader Pro from Breeze Systems (external link) to rename the files as you transfer them. My naming convention is folder number followed by file number and camera tag, so I have files like 101C_1932_1D3.CR2 or 167C_6735_D60.CRW. Added benefit - if you carry a GPS while you're out, it'll read the track file and geotag your photos, and it supports tagging the files as you download.

EOS Utility, which you get for free with the camera, can do this too. Rename the files, that is.

Or you simply "name" your files 100-0001 to 100-9999 to 101-0001 to 101-9999 to...
Remove the dash and you have running numbers once again.

ok, thanks for the options guys.

After thinking about it last night some more, I am guessing it must go back to the whole max 8 character limits for filenames in the old days, I.E IMG_9999 which of course takes up 8 characters.

I normally just use windows file transfer to do it, and store my RAWS into 500 image folders. To be honest I have rarelyrused the EOS utility, and never to transfer. I'll take a look at it first as I already have it.

I'll also have a look at the other suggested options too.

Thanks again everyone.
