Maybe just really bad quality welding glass, not that any of it is that good to start with

Maybe post a few example strait out of the camera to see if anybody can get better results
Plenty of people can get good images, so something must be a miss somewhere

Yes but your 3 filters cost a bit more than a bit of welding glass!

True. But they come in handy by themselves for other shots. And the color rendition is flawless.

Here's another. The sea in front of me was very choppy and had a fast current. The slow shutter speed smoothed it out nicely.

Sorry if this is out of line here, but:

That's all well and good. But this thread is titled Welding Glass for a reason... Not "Look what you can use in place of welding glass" - Because I think we all know that proper filters exist. Some people like a DIY adventure.

How does this compare to a B&W 10 stop ND filter?

The glass is not as good of quality. The tint is usually horrible. It is usually somewhere in the 10stop range. It takes a bit to get the colors correct. You have to fix it to your camera with a rubber band (or some other method)...

It is $2-$3 total...

It's challenging to do, satisfying when you get results and a fun way to enjoy your camera.

Yeah, I guess I should have started a new thread. The thing is, the concept of "Black Glass" photography is the same, regardless of the method used. Maybe we need a generic Black Glass thread.

Here is my first go at it. I had an extra lens hood laying around so I shaved it down and glued the glass right to it.
