Welding Glass (£1/$1 ND Filter) Exposures

I remember this one where someone tried this and had to use tape to fix the light leaks and this one I remember quite well and may be worth the try if you have the tools and the penitence for it.

Thanks for the links, they helped stir up some ideas. The reason I want to cut this down to size and slide it into my holder is that I'd like the versatility to be able to stack with a grad if I'd like. Otherwise I'll simply do as DarklingSmilie (above) and glue it to an adapter ring.

Using a diamond wheel to cut, slowly, should there be any problems?

What material should I use as a glued on seal that will take the sliding in and out?

At the beach with the weliding glass in front of a very sharp Cosina 24mm/2.8 FD converted to EOS EF.

So a couple questions, I pulled out my #12 shade home made filter this weekend to really give it a good try. I came out with some (IMO) good images. The one posted below is the only one I have with me at work.

So I had glued a ring adapter onto the glass, then screwed it onto the lens ... well that became a PITA real fast. My process was, set up, compose, AF, switch to MF, then very carefully scew on the filter and repeate a few times as I would slip and move the focusing ring just a little

Fast forward to this morning and I have a knock off Cokin P holder in my Amazon cart. Got me to thinking if I am going to use welding glass for a 12 stop (this is close to what I calculated out it out to), maybe I could use a less dark glass for something a little "softer" has anyone tried something not as potent as a #12 shade glass?

how do you guys get the wb right? i just bought some welding glass from home depot but i cant seem to get my wb to look like normal

Hello Folks, I was reading through this posting and just wanted to add my 2 cents. I was reading more about ND filter and an easy DIY project. I creadted this!


Nifty-Fifty $100 Canon 50mm f1:8 Lens ( got on B&H)
Welders Googles $8 (Amazon)
Tiffen 55mm UV $6.25 (Ultra Violet) Glass Filter ( had an old one)(Adorama)

One lens installed perfectly. They are 50mm wide by 3mm thick

Second Lens

Now a 52mm filter installed and you got an easy ND filter!

First picture 1 lens second picture 2 lens.

Once I get a nice non rainy day ill get some shots loaded to see if it works out!
