I'll be taking my polycarbonate filter and glass filter out to the lake tomorrow. They are doing a hot air balloon festival here, so after that I'm gonna do some water shots. Well, if I can find much water. Not having any rain here in Central Texas the lake by my apt is something like 40ft low.

Very jealous, I love shooting hot air balloons, and with the 10-stop glass it could get very interesting, I hope you get to shoot them with it, if so I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

If you do use them on the balloons I'd really like to see the results. On the ground it'd make them nice and ghostly as they sway in the wind and in the sky they might move slow enough to be streaked. I say go for it! ;) :)

Thanks guys, much appreciated :)
I focused before putting on the glass but realised I could boost brightness during LV to at least see the scene before I took it. Wasn't that dark then. Didn't try to AF during LV though.
Here's the last from that outing. Tried a diff processing this time.

My alarm didn't go off this morning, so I missed out on that. :(

Just about as good as I could get it. 30s @ f/4.5 ISO100 and 11 shade filter.

I use DCE tools to do color correct, but it's telling me there is a magenta cast, even though it's green.

I did order a HiTech 10 stop last week. See how that will work out when it gets here.

On my monitor is very much looks to have a magenta cast, and the greens are desaturated.

Right, but when I load the image, and goto DCE Tools to correct, it's saying it's a yellow-yellow cast when I first do it (sorry, thought it said Magenta).

I get better results using the Auto Levels feature in CS3.

I ordered a shutter release remote control, just a cheap one. Hopefully I can start experimenting with long shutter speeds this weekend.

If I want to go to the beach and take a picture of a sunset with the water, how long should I do the shutter speed? 1 minute? 2 minutes? 5 minutes? Any tips would be excellent.

You'll have to experiment when you get there, just meter for a normal scene and then adjust for the ten stops (or thereabouts) of the filter.

Perhaps some practice in the garden before venturing to the beach first to get used to it?

Keep in mind the motion of the Earth, especially as the sun get closer to the horizon where it will be more evident. Use an exposure that is too long and the sun will look like an egg.
IMHO, Even if you use a welding glass filter I would keep the shutter speed under 30 seconds, even less if you use a long focal length.

Anything over 30 seconds will make the sun look odd shaped. It may look like it's barely moved in 30 seconds but it moves faster than you think.

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.

Thanks
How about a picture of water crashing onto the rocks in the evening time but not the sun in the shot? Doesn't it come out too dark if you don't do it long enough? Also won't it have a green tint to it that you have to photoshop back to look normal?

Yes, when you use the Welding Mask filter it does come out very dark, and yes you do need something such as Photoshop or similar to bring the color / white balance back to normal.
