Hi all,

I was wondering what would be a good cheap tripod for the £40 - £60 price bracket.

You can see what my equipment is in my signature so would need to be sturdy enough for that.

Thank you.

The Bogen Manfrotto line. Review them at www.bhphoto.com (external link). You'll end up with a heavy tripod that will be very well made and very stable and not expensive. As they get lighter, they get more expensive.

Take a look at Redsnapper, they get rave reviews from the folks on talk photography (UK based forum), prices are £50ish for a tripod, and the heads start at £15, they also do combo's which are good value too, but a little more than your budget.

I personally use a manfrotto 190xprob with 486rc2 head, I love it, but it is more than you want to spend (the tripod is £90 ish, the head is £40 ish).

I use a Velbon sherpa 250r which cost me about £60 from a local LCE branch, i expect you could get it cheaper if you shopped around.

the 250r is not a bad tripod, its a prety well made unit with a sturdy metal, smooth operating panhead, some people have not liked the panhead although i get on quite well with it, the whole thing comes with a basic shoulder bag and is light enough to carry all day but i'd carry it on a backpack or in a more comfortable bag.

The velbon is not as sturdy as a manfrotto 190 and not as adaptable either. in hindsight i wish that i had waited until i had the money for a manfrotto just for the extra features you get.

If you need to get a cheap tripod then the velbon 250r is worth considering, if you think you can wait a little while for a better tripod like the manfrotto 190 series you wont regret it.

There's an adage about tripods to remember: No matter what the specs say or how good a tripod looks, you can only have two of the following three qualities: stability, light weight, and low price.

I'll go for Stability and Low price :) Weight is not such an issue so lower the price the better :)
