So, I'm getting ready to order the 5D Mk II, and I was wondering...

How sealed is the 5D2, compared to the 40D? (Both, when using L lenses)

Only sealing the 40D has is on the battery door and that's questionable. 5D2 has sealing throughout the body but it ain't waterproof.

None of the bodies are waterproof. Moisture and dust resistant is more appropriate.

Used my 5D2 in the rain many times. No problems. Just keep a small towel on top to soak up the moisture, rather than plastic bags or rain covers that tend to cause the moisture and condensation to build up on the body.

I wouldn't put a lot of trust in any of the non-1D weather sealing ability. There have been too many stories posted where a camera died because it got wet. A while back one gent got splashed taking a pic of breaking surf and the result was a dead 5DII. Also, even on the newer cameras water damage is not covered by Canon even if on warranty. That said, I have taken all my cameras outside in the rain and used various techniques to keep as much water off them as possible such as shooting under an umbrella, keeping the camera under my shirt until the moment I want to take a pic, and toweling off the body. So far no dead cameras but then again I am very water concious and get it off as soon as I can.

I guess the question to really ask yourself is:
Is the photo your going to take in the rain worth a couple hundred dollars or maybe 2.7K?

If so, risk it, if not, you might want to be more cautious.

I live in Southern California, so there is no "extreme" weather.

I have shot the breaking surf with my 40D, with the unsealed 50 1.8, and one giant wave came from behind me, and DRENCHED me and my camera. The camera survived. I'm not sure how, but it did (only problem was the dried salt water on the front of the lens element, which took a while to get off)...

Anyway, I'm mainly wondering for rain. Will the 5D2 really only stand up in a mist\light-drizzle? Or could I take it out an a steady-rainfall?

I'll probably just buy those Optech rain-sleeves anyway, since they are so cheap...

Let's not go too far. They both use the same kind of "foam" type material as seals. The 1DMKIII uses rubber seals and gaskets.

Better than nothing I would say.

You know, there's a little rubber seal on the lens mount of a weather-proofed lens. Why not have that seal on the body instead, so that ALL lenses at least have that seal? Or would that be encroaching on the realm of 'L' lenses?

Arguably, it's like putting in IS on the sensor/body, but at least, they say, that IS is much more efficient in the lens (and has other advantages like seeing that in your viewfinder).

i bet someone could manufacture a rubber seal to fit around eos bodies that could be applied with aspecial glue for really cheap. that person would be rich. and it would be cheap to make. i'd buy one for $10.

The 1-series cameras have a mating surface on the mount that takes advantage of the L lens gasket.
