I like the location but you're not the first person I've seen say they don't like it. What about it doesn't work for you?

I haven't used video mode much, but doesn't the shutter still work as a shutter button (for still pics) when you are in video mode?

Anytime one has to let go of the camera to activate a function and then re grip it, it adds to shake of footage. For me, on the 5DMKII, its too far away from my thumb/hands comfort spot once the video is rolling.

If they could have dual "shutter buttons", one below the one already there for video, you'd never have to move your hand once the camera was gripped (and settings already applied).

Now that video has been introduced to the SLR, ergonomics will and should take place like that of a motorcycle.

I think you will see a lot more "in action" functions appear on the left side soon.

Not an avid video user ... just know what I like and dont like.

Do you really have to take your hand off to reach the start button? Anybody who can press the AF-On button with their thumb should be able to press the recording start/stop button just as easily.

Dont have to take it off ... but my grip changes. Re grip = shake.

I'm thinking along the lines of exterior controls on a water housing also.

It would be nice to have the ability to start/stop video with the remote...

Pardon the questions, but I haven't done any video work so I don't know. Why would you have to change your grip after pressing start? Can't the thumb just rest there until it's time to press stop?

Yeah, water housing would be a PITA. But wouldn't that apply to any camera unless the housing was specifically designed to let you hold press the start/stop button without changing your grip?

Absolutely. It would also help to solve Mark II's concerns with the button placement on the body.

oh yeah one thing i just remembered my 7D seems to be very bad at deciding what orientation it is in when it is pointed vertically (taking a picture of a ceiling), only applies if you have oritation linked af points.

I wonder if it would have the same problem pointed straight down?

just tried it, yes the problem is still there when pointed down.

Also whilst holding down af (in servo) and switching between all orientations a few times the camera broke and refused to AF, powered off/on lcd read err.

Pulled battery 2 secs then everything was fine.

Although to under normal circumstances I can't see this being an issue, however just a warning incase anyone wants to crash there camera ;)

This is possible with the RC-1 or RC-5 (page 151 in the manual) as long as the drive mode is set on one of the 2 timed/remote settings.

I had the same issue with the 30D, but it's to be expected. When the camera is pointed straight up (or down) it really has no way to "know" what orientation you are shooting in. It does get annoying when you take a few shots the same way and they come out in different orientations. That has happened to me a couple of times, even during hand held HDR shots.

While shooting this past weekend I was switching back and forth between hor. and vert. and I could see this issue occurring if I'd made the mistake of holding the focus button while rotating.

For what it's worth, having it remember the different points was very nice to have. Was at a dog show and when the judge would send the dogs around they would follow a set path. When they were moving along the far wall a horizontal frame was usually best and then when they turned and were coming towards me a vert. frame was best and since the dogs in any group are about the same size I was able to select the AF point over the dogs face for each orientation and just rotate the camera.

The new position of the LCD illuminate button, keep pressing it for the ISO button.
