Bloody hell! That's a fantastic idea. I'm 195 cm (6' 4"ish) and I've got the biggest hands of anybody I know. I've tried a grip with my 40D but the groove where your fingers go isn't continued on the Canon grip. Even the wireless grip has that problem. Yours looks like the perfect solution.

Glad you like it. yes the battery grips are great for shooting portrait, but landscape they just add more weight and bulk. I looked at different materials, plastics, rubber, ally all too heavy, the wood is very light. Someone suggested ebony wood stain and some laquer, i like that idea for a final finish, but I wont finish till I use it a bit and maybe adjust the contours for my fingers and overall size of the base.

fyi, I bought a cheap spare quick release tripod plate, cut a block of wood aprox size, then drill hole and chisel out recess space for the qr plate, screw that down onto the wood so its sits flush, then attach to camera, draw around base, remove and cut to shape, sandpaper and dremmel the contours, bit of non slip sticky back foam on top, hey presto lol... something to do when its raining I guess :)

oRGie - I am an EOS and the 7D was my idea

I don't like the rear LCD on the 7D. It has too much resolution. ;) On my 40D the photos always looked better after I downloaded them onto my computer.

With the 7D the photos look sharper on the rear LCD than they do on my computer screen.

Do I need a new monitor?

EDITED to add smiley face.

If you're serious...you could reduce the sharpness in your parameter settings that the rear LCD reproduces....right?

Another point....
How well does your PRINT output match your LCD on the camera (or the monitor display)...or are we just talking about displayed images....?

I haven't printed any images yet. Only viewed them on my Laptop screen. No, I am not really complaining. It is just an observation that the 7D LCD is much better than the 40D.

In the past I knew if an image on my 40D LCD looked good, then it would look even better on my computer monitor.

I haven't shot much with the 7D but I did notice that while shooting, many of the images that looked great on the LCD, didn't look all that great on the laptop screen.

the silver ring helps to fend off the nikon spirits around you. it's supposed to reflect their evil mojo in a circular fashion creating a black hole to suck their evilness into.

this is all invisible....you cannot see it happening, but when the nikonians are around, and their spirit gets sucked into oblivion, their personalities change and they start asking you all kinds of questions on your canon creation and makes them want to convert to canon.

It's true. It sucked my Nikon D80 right out of me to sell it then it forced me to come to the dark side. Damn that silver ring!!!

Still nothing to complain about but siince the weather here in Belgium is so bad for 2 weeks now, not yet enough time to make a burning test in real action.

After getting the 7D, I dislike the fact that it has awakened my desire to improve the rest of my gear and software. I don't have a decent telephoto and I PP with DPP and an old version of ACDSee. The need for upgrades is roaring again! :)

Two minor issues:

1) maybe just I don't know how. The AF area mode selection cannot be changed without going into the "Q" menu and using LCD screen. With 30D/40D/5D, I can use the AF area selection button to enable all AF point, and use the joystick to pick single AF point, so all AF <=> single with a touch of button.

2) the buttons on top of the camera near the top LCD, are harder to press than older camera. They are smaller, flatter (to the body) and have less tactile feedback than older camera.

Other than these, everything else is a joy to use. Viewfiner is so much bigger than older crop body. I would say at least 20% bigger in each linear direction compare to 50D. I also love the viewfinder overlay. There are so many way to customize buttons. I am still trying out to see which is best for me. IQ wise, I think 5D is still a bit better, but 7D is very close
