I just got my new 5DII today, upgrading from 5DI so I am familiar with buttons/settings. On my Mark I I used to be able to turn the big dial on the back to adjust the exposure compensation right after a shutter half-press. It does not do this with my new 5DII. Also, in manual mode the big dial is supposed to be used to set the aperture. Nope, not with my new 5DII. So I thought that the power switch might not be making contact when I turn it all the way on to the dial, but the dial DOES work with other settings, like WB, Drive mode, etc.

Do I have a faulty brand new 5DII or am I missing something?

Doesn't sound right to me, at all. The big wheel works the same way for 40D/5D/5DII and probably all the other xxD's.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

That's what I thought. I may be sending it back...

There's no custom function I have have bumped to disable it? Probably not. I think the switch is broken, it's just not acting like it is activating the dial at all. I CAN set everything with the new quick menu on the screen, but I would rather do it through the dial, it's faster.

Man, I waited a long time for this upgrade and now I got to send it back and wait some more. Bummer.

As mentioned - does not sound right. However - check and make sure you aren't making a silly mistake somewhere before mailing it off. The power switch can be rather tight, but can also be knocked easily.

Absolutely understood. I would hate to send it off for something silly like that, or some custom function setting that got bumped. I definitely do have the switch all the way on/up for the dial to be active. And I have powered it all the way off, removed batteries, etc and turned it back on. I think it's the mechanical switch failure. But I will call Adorama before I ship it back to make sure I am doing the right things to insure it is indeed a failure.

Perhaps you could try change all settings to default and try the dial again afterwards.

+ 1

If you haven't already done so, clear all custom functions, reset the camera to factory defaults and give it another go.

Even with the rear wheel disabled by the switch, the dial should still work for other things, like WB and DRIVE settings. Which yours does, so it certainly looks like the switch.

I very much doubt a mechanical/electrical problem. If the big dial works for other functions than it should work for this function as well. It must be some sort of menu setting that is playing up. The way these camera's are constructed the central processor determines what setting to change on the basis of the combination of dial positions, button(s) pressed and menu settings.
If any of the dials or buttons is faulty a whole range of functions would not work and not just one.

Only other fault could be a software glitch - but that is very unlikely as that would probably affect the camera in other ways as well...

Total factory default reset... done that?
