Ok, I've done a quick search but can't find anything obvious - Does DPP strip keywords out of CR2 files and mess with metadata?

I don't use it much, but have been playing around with it on a few images lately, apart from (IMO) the 'clunky' UI it produces some nice images to my eyes :-)
Anyway, I just realised that all the keywords I assign in Bridge completely disappear when converting to JPG, and the copyright symbol that is part of my copyright line also goes, along with the copyrighted 'flag' going missing...

I've double checked with a few other images and the same happens.

Capture One 4 also strips the copyright symbol and copyrighted 'flag' but manages to keep the keywords.

Is it because they are an Adobe 'thing' or is DPP just pants at passing this through the conversion?

Last I checked, DPP doesn't read the XMP sidecar file that Adobe Bridge writes to on your hard drive.

The basic CR2 file only contains your copyright info you had set via Canon's utilities. When you process with DPP, all you get is what was originally in the CR2 file.

Some of the things you can do from a workflow perspective is to assign the metadata from Bridge to the JPEG file rather than the CR2 file. Or have an app/utility to copy the metadata from the XMP file to the new JPEGs. I've tried writing directly to the CR2 files, but DPP writes to the metadata area to save changes and it usually overwrites whatever metadata I write to it.

Good luck!

DPP will not read xmp.

It will only retain IPTC if its in the CR2 file. And (I think) only when converting to tiff, not jpg.
The only program that I know of that is capable of writing IPTC into CR2 files is iView Media Pro / Expression media. (and maybe some canon software?)

Peter, René,

Thanks for the replies.

It makes sense now - It's the XMP file that is actually holding my keywords and IPTC data, and the cut-down basic version of my copyright notice is the one I put into EOS Utility (without the copyright year and symbol).
A shame because I'm liking the quality of output from DPP, and the more i use it the easier it becomes to use it.

All of my images are bulk keyworded at the Ingestion stage if possible, and I then use Adobe Bridge CS4 to add individual keywords to the CR2 files before importing into Lightroom (I find Bridge easier to use for this)

Interestingly, Capture One will pass the keywords on, but like DPP does not touch the IPTC data.

Does anyone know of a utility to extract keywords/IPTC from XMP's that i can then write to JPG or TIF files??

Bridge?

Doh! :o

'File Info' - just copy from original and paste to new file
I can than 'Replace Metadata' from my template i already have set up and use the 'Set copyrighted to true' script I have.

Simples! :D

One more step for me I suppose, but in batches is not too bad.

Thanks!

Sounds like you are making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Why not apply the keywording and copyright data after you have done your culling and editing to only the images that merit processing instead of to all of them?
