I do not know everything wrong but I will comment that the pepper is not as sharp as it should be and the image is a bit over exposed. The overly white leaf tops are competing with the pepper for attention.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Just can't seem to get it right.

Composing the picture again tighter on the pepper would help a lot.

+1

The subject is just way too small and insignificant. Show me the pepper, not the garden.

pick the pepper, and put it in a bowl with some tomatoes for contrast. too much leggy plant material around it that is distracting, rather than helping it "pop".

That is not an easy photograph to make and as usual mother nature serves us with as little real help as possible. I think Scott's idea is best.

Better - any food photographers out there to help with making the viewer of the image want to eat salsa out there? I would have to say less white bowl would help. It is a little out of focus, and don't cut the bottom of the pepper off. Maybe if all the supporting items were stacked, and this sat in front of the stack, and you took a shot from level, not above, (keep the background OOF) that would be a huge improvement over the first pepper shot. Your model isn't being paid by the hour. Keep trying!
