nothing like a confederate flag "tying" the photo together :)
and.. since you are asking - this is why this photo does not work.
-they are dead in center
- you are too far away (needs tighter crop)
- the BG is busy
- the light is flat

I don't think I would have shot this at ƒ11. I would have used your 50, and a bigger aperture to keep the focus on the couple more than the surrounding street, homes, car, etc..

Well I shot such a small aperture to have the photo and them in focus.
Sorry about the flag.

oh no worries, it is not offending me by any means...
anywho:
people forget sometimes to get closer and mor epersonal with their subjects. There are millions of ways to take a hot of a couple and to show off their car - wha tyou did is a typical mistake for all those who are starting out. You have no idea how many shots like these I have myself. (none!) lol jk... but get closer - pick another angle - practice and people will suddenly will enjoy photos from YOU and will call you their "photographer friend" (story of my life) ;)

Agree - fill the frame with your subjects. Hand in pocket and confederate flag are standing out to me also.

If you get closer and open your aperture up, you will also manage to blur your background out.

Overall this is a great snapshot but lacks any real life and vibrancy take the advice here try and get closer move them out of the middle of the frame pose them different etc. etc.

A ladder, nearly wide open aperture, and a tight crop would really make this shot better.
