I'll have to check the documentation from mine but I'm pretty sure that all Zeiss Z series SLR lenses are made in Japan by Cosina to Zeiss designs Website

High class Manufacturing isnt a question of where you produce your stuff, its a question of how you want to produce, quality wise. And trust me, you dont want to pay for the german guy that costs about 40€ per hour, just for looking through the little Window in the CNC Machines. I agree, if the lens is well built with good QC it doesn't really matter where it was made - although if the manufacturer is using cheap labour in places like the far east I'd expect to see some reflection of this in the price.
