Well a long story short, my faithful MBP logic board maybe failing, specifically the 8600m GT graphics card. I am aware of the extended coverage but there are reasons why I may not be covered!

So my question is, does anybody no where I can buy a replacement logic board in the UK? Its an Early 2008 Penryn MBP 2.5

I'm not sure if this is still Apple's policy, but you had to return the defective lobo to get a new one. This was because Apple wanted to keep the ROMs out of the wild.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

They may be able to repair it for you, but if it's not in warranty, there's a good chance you are more or less screwed and will need to pay for the (ridiculous) part cost and labor costs. Won't really hurt to have it checked out though (other than if they make you foot the bill, not sure what the policy would be).

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

You're still covered by the extended warranty unless you took a swim with the laptop:D. I'm not sure if the water sensor is in the 08 MBP's. Here's the link (external link). I have the same MBP and was worried that this post didn't include the 2.5GHz MBP they would not honor it - but Apple told me that all 8600m GT's of early 2008 models were covered.

A new 2.5GHz logic board is around $1,200-$1,400 USD with a one-for-one trade in the states. If you're willing to spend that I would just buy a new refurbished MBP ;)

Obviously you haven't purchased many logic/motherboards for laptops. All of them are expensive; some even more expensive than the original laptop - depending on age. Not one that I've found with 'registered' or 'authorized' parts was less than 2/3 the cost of the laptop's original price. There are even a few Dell, HP and Sony MB's that will cost more than the original laptop. If a laptop motherboard fails and is out of warranty and is more than two years old it's probably better to just buy a new laptop.

What most people forget is that the margin for profit for most laptops is so narrow now that companies like Dell and HP make their money on service contracts and extra's. There's no such benefit for out of warranty parts and most parts purchased after the end of warranty only have 30-90 guarantee's.

Never said the MBP was special, all laptop mobos are expensive since they are all custom. And they are ridiculously priced, as you said.

If the laptop is out of warranty but not broken due to abuse ie. water or being dropped then you can do a depot flat rate repair. This will cover the replacement of any parts needed to fix the laptop for one flat cost I know it used to be about $387 for the powerbooks not sure on a MBP but I know it is allot less than the parts+labor repair that is done in house at an apple store. If you go to see someone at the Genius bar and your laptop is not covered under warranty they should offer the send it out flat rate as this is the best option for any major repair. You can get a logic board from powerbookmedic.com but unless you are really used to working on mac's I would not recommend it.
