I was trying to photograph this tree but it was quite windy. So instead of trying to get a regular shot, I waited for wind to pick up the speed to get this "motion blur" effect for the tree branches while everything else remaining in reasonable focus.

Comments/critique always appreciated - thanks for looking :)

This is a cool shot! I can't say much negative about it. The motion of the tree makes the rest of the image look even that much more sharp. Nice!

Using adversity to your advantage - this is where originality springs from.

Well done.

I like it. It's not only a good choice to make the outcome is refreshing and original. It helps that the scene has a carpet of still leaves to offset the ones in motion. You might play with a slightly tighter crop or not.

I would agree. It's a different take on a common subject.

I'm not so sure about the bush in the bottom left. As Jet said, perhaps a tighter crop would work out well.

I like it, nice to see in camera motion blur effects which require skill and imagination rather than relying on photoshopping later. There is an however, which is if the wind was sufficiently enough to strong to move the limbs of the tree, then why are the leaves on the ground as sharp as the latest 500billion blade razor.

Thanks Charlie! The leaves are sharp because they were not moving - quite simple :) Getting into "why" of that would require some fluid mechanics stuff... but in short the velocity of the wind is not as much as we get closer to the ground. Though I am not too sure, but the fact the area is surrounded by buildings (it's a lawn next to my apartment) may also contribute to this. This combined with the fact that exposure was still not too long (0.4 sec) resulted in what we see here :)
