I've looked around a bit but can't find much about converting a 1D mk II to full-time Infrared - does anyone know of this being done? I have a 10D that I did myself and although the photo's it produces is very interesting I keep thinking about a higher spec setup.

There was a 5D avail recently with a scratched filter that I was quite interested in until the bidding went ridiculous (as they're prone to do )

Now there's a 1D Mk II with a failed shutter that sounds like it would be quite a nice unit and given if I had it in bits to remove the IR filter, replacing a $185 part shouldn't be too difficult at the same time. Almost all of my IR shooting has been using a 16-35 so far, and a 1.3x crop would make this a wee bit wider still.
Any thoughts?

Why would you ever do that to a 1d series? *slaps you*

I'd do that to a 1D series to get better quality pictures...

Maxmax or Lifepixel or Spencer's will do the conversion for you. I'm certain they'll sell you the 1.3 filter for DIY as well. Haven't specifically heard of the conversion being done with this camera, but plenty of 1.6 and full-frame conversions have been done, so I don't see why a 1.3 sensor would be any different. You might want to ask around over at the IR Photography Community (external link).

I still can't see why anyone would want to do that to any camera!... Or does the Infra red conversion see through clothes? :p

Huh? It's a different type of photography! It's not for everyone but it certainly does draw interest from those that look at it.

To the OP ... I would imagine the 1D MKII would be an incredible IR camera. Don't know what the difference would be but if you did your own 10D, I'm guessing you can figure out the 1D MKII. I don't have the link handy but there are a few IR forums out there. They might be able to help.

Not sure why you'd do it to a 1DMK2 unless you had one on the cheap that needed to be fixed anyway. The cameras strong points are build, FPS, focus speed / accuracy and ability to customize it to most any need. Why limit it to one mode? Are you going to shoot fast action sports in IR? Kind of like buying one of those expensive, bazillion function Swiss Army knives and taking everything off except the screwdriver… Cool idea, I guess, if you have one to convert and can get it done.
