Well I bought a Powershot S70 and an underwater case; I needed to try them out so I went to the Maldives. Not sure if I will continue with this form of photography, you need to concentrate so much on taking the photograph that you miss out on quite a bit that is going on around you. The slow focussing speed and the shutter lag on the S70 made this a real pain. My first result were awful, I appreciate that these are little better but you will be amazed how different taking pictures whilst diving is to taking them on land. I felt like a fish out of water (shocking pun, but I have been on a 12 hour flight)

You can see more from my trip at http://www.neil-rice.com/gallery/index.php?groupid=29 (external link)

You may not have enjoyed the process much, but the results are impressive. Nice shots, Neil!

I think those are very very good. Shallow and very clear water helps a lot (try that here in the Mediterranean without a huge setup of flashes...). And yes, shooting while diving can be somehow distracting from the rest of the action. But is such a joy !!!!!

and warm ;)

The turtle was spotted at a 5 metre safety stop; he was at about 7 metres. I did not take the camera on any deep channel dives as it would have been too distracting but I saw plenty of white and black tip reef sharks, eagle rays, and huge napoleon. The vis was incredible and the water temp an almost constant 30 degrees. On the reef dives I never needed to go below 25 metres.

You are right, drift dives rarely go with photography for the same old well known reasons :D I did not noticed that you are from UK. Being so, you know exactly what is a dive with low vis and cold water much better than me. Up there can be really hard.
