I've always wanted to shoot this sport. Up your iso to get some more shutter speed but the focus seems off also not just motion blur.

Thanks , I need all the help/ info /instruction I can get .

These are world class skaters on the best ice on the planet being photographed with
great equipment by a total newbie , short track racing is very exciting and my lack of photography experience does the sport no justice .......I'm assuming my DoF was not suitable either and may account for the so many of the skaters being out of focus ? Could this be corrected by using a smaller/higher aperture in AV mode?

Please suggest settings you would use and I should try

Thanks

Brad

Hi Brad,

Thanks for sharing!

You'll definitely need more shutter speed. Whether that's more ISO or a higher aperture depends on the set-up for that particular scene. I wish it was as easy as "what setting would you use", but it's not that easy.

If you are unfamiliar with what we're talking about, then I would pick up a copy of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.

Welcome and keep bringing us pictures!
Bryan

Thanks Bryan

I really appreiate the info , I just began reading Perfect Digital Photography by Jay Dickman and Jay Kinghorn .

I went back today and upped the ISO and advanced the AEB and had much better results , it helped that one the coaches is also a pro photographer who gave me a few tips too , I got some great pics of the long track skaters and these from the short track

I have shot short track many times. It's challenging to shoot. Skaters are very fast and whip around that corner extremely fast. It will give any camera lens combo a run for it's money.

You really need to get off of AV mode. Your camera is seeing the dark skins and white ice and trying to get a good exposure, which in turn puts your SS down to far for this sport.

Get into manual mode! Get your exposure set before you start shooting. Crank that iso up on that 7D, use single focus point with expansion on in the custom functions. Make sure your in Al Servo. Get yourself a nice monopod to pivot your camera on.

I usually have my MIIn and 300 2.8 - which is a great fast combo, but this sport still puts the Al Servo to the test. I am usually around 1/500th - 2.8 ISO1600 (great lite arena), al servo, single center point, and on a monopod.

One thing I notice with my MIIn is that is has a hard time locking focus on the solid color skins they wear, I end up with shots like this. I end up tweaking the point to were it needs to be and turning expansion points on. I image with the 7D you have some more features that you may want to try.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try your method today, your right
about trying to capture the action , it's even more difficult when shooting
world record holders:D

Yesterday I upped the ISO to 4000 and the AEB a full point and had better results,
the camera does seem to like some colors much better than others and some combinations not at all
