Those look nice.

Curious what setup and settings you used on the flash.

Thanks!

Manfrotto 223B bracket

580II w/Quantum 2x2 set somewhere between 1/4 to 1/2 depending on distance and field. Adjust aperture if needed.

F/2.8 at ISO 640-800

I had almost the sames settings the other night and about 75% of my shots looked liked crap. No where near as good as these. Did you use bare flash? What type of flash rig did you use?

Great jog with the whites ... example #4 you can see the mesh perfect. Curious - Lightroom or Power point?

I aks b/c lightroom does a great job with recovery.

Lookin' good.

The white jerseys are clipping, but good exposures for their faces (that's more important).

Just a touch of motion blur on the foot in #1. Glove in #5. But much better than the ghosting/blur I'm still fighting.

How would you rate the ambient field lighting?

Yep... same here. I still haven't found the magic combination. I tried ETTL, but maybe I'll switch to 1/4 - 1/2 manual.

I thought I wasn't getting enough stopping power and I thought that I was out of flash range for a 200/2.8, but eigga is getting good results at 400mm.

Really nice. I'm curious if any of you guys who shoot flash would consider dropping the saturation a bit to see if the shots looked more realistic to what a viewer of the game actually see.

Reason I ask is because my son plays on friday nights, sees the flashed shots and says that they don't look anything like what he sees (or I see, for that matter) on the field when playing.

Don't get me wrong--your shots are fantastic, just not what my eyes see during a night game on Friday night.

Dave I think that is the whole reason I shoot flash is to give a more pleasing look. While some hate it most prefer it. If I want the photos to look dark and dingy I could easily shoot ambient and get rid of all the clutter and expense of shooting flash. The parents love it.

Well the simple reason is I shoot for MaxPreps and the require flash.

The reason I would do it anyway is for faces. Regardless what the lighting is like for night football you almost never get light inside the helmet... and my experience is faces sell better.

just not what my eyes see during a night game on Friday night

I think that could be said for A LOT of good pictures...my job is to make the pictures better than what you see in most cases. But I do understand its not for everyone and respect that as well.

What do you mean by " flash rig"

How do you mount your flash? Did you mount it above or below the camera? I mounted a superclamp about 18" below the camera w/ the flash on a swivel bracket (external link). I used the Manfrotto Telescoping Flash Bracket (external link) and got better results with it. I used bare flash (as I usually do) on M @ 1/4 - 1/2 and didn't get anywhere near these results. Then again. With my officiating schedule, I only shoot flashed football about once every 2 years or so.

Ditto.

In post #5 above eigga says he uses the same Manfrotto bracket that you and I use. You can also see the subtle shadow pattern behind the players' feet from the high-mount flash instead of the monster shadow that appears when you clamp low.
