Tamron 28-75/2.8 on a 50D body? I've heard that it's a pretty good lens for the money. I'm curious how it would work for volleyball and basketball.

Probably not fast enough in 75% of gyms to get great quality shots. I'd try to get at least f2.

I shot volleyball with that lens once on an XSI indoors with poor lighting. ISO 1600 with 2.8f stop and max shutter speed I could get was around 1/50 which was a bit too slow, couldn't freeze any action. The next time I went, I slapped on the nifty fifty and everything was golden. YMMV cause lighting conditions where you shoot may be different and you have the option of ISO 3200 and 6400 on the 50D.

The lens is a nice lens overall. It stays on my XSi almost all the time. Very sharp wide open.

I need to stay out of the buy/sell forum. It's burning a hole in the wallet...

The 50mm seems a little short. I haven't shot any kind sof sports since the days of 35mm and 400 speed B & W film. I'm thinking I used to use a flash, because my lens was a 28-135 and I'm sure wasn't that fast. I just don't recall the most used focal length. Of course, on a crop camera, the 50 is more like 80.

Indoor volleyball, then you need the 85 1.8. In the gyms I shoot in 1600 iso yields about 400ss. Sometimes I'll underexpose 1 stop for the extra shutterspeeds. But an 85 is the way to go for indoor sports.
