The color aware focusing doesn't do anything as far as I can tell in terms of performance. The D3 has never been able to top the 1D3 or 1D4 in AF speed or accuracy. Every test I've seen shows the D3 playing second fiddle to the 1D.

Keep in mind, the D3 only has 15 cross type sensors. The other 36 are horizontal line sensitive only... they are, in essence, similar to the outer points on the 5D2... and we all know how well they work. :) They don't work very well in low light or low contrast scenes.

Even the 1D3 has 19 cross type sensors, and of course the 1D4 has 39. That means the 1D4 can track a target across it's view screen and remain locked dead-nuts on regardless of lighting conditions. The D3(s), not so much.

I never use anything but the center point when shooting action. I have never even tried to shoot of center much.

What style would you be shooting to take advantage of the cross sensors?

how about we all agree that both cameras now kick ass in the high ISO ability! lol

A few years ago 3200 was the tops, now we are looking at ISO 12500 as very usable! I mean that is simply amazing

Do you have a Mark IV? If so, set C.FnIII: Autofocus/Drive AF expansion w/selected pt. to #3. Then go find someone running. See how that works out for ya. :) It's a VERY powerful AF function that hands off the tracking from one point to another automatically as the target moves around in the frame.

Ok ya, thats what i was thinking.

I have a 1DIII. I find it more fitting for me to shoot on center only. Expansion off. I guess I am just scared.

This is correct...

...The 1D3 has sufficient RAW processing power to mantain full operational AF speed in 45-point-Matrix mode, and basically smoke the D3.

And there has been repeatable and controlled evidence of this, for a LONG time (a whole bunch of cameras on this report with quite interesting results, to say the least):

I shoot a lot of sports in portrait orientation and I can "fill the frame" a bit more if I pick an off-center focus point. Aiming at the head or chest of a player you don't get as many cut off feet that way.

The 1D IV allows you to register different AF points for landscape and portrait mode too which is great, when you switch back to landscape mode for a quick shot you don't have the AF point out to the right as you would with the Mark II/III.

Agreed for sure, I shoot surfing a lot and I am rarely, if ever, filing the surfer in the frame.

In the scenario you mention it seems perfectly necessary to choose an off center point, i found that the 1DIII does a fine job off center, even though I rarely try it in action. I can only imagine the 1D4 off center.

I see where your going, but marginally? I am not sure I follow. I thought magazine (high) quality was around 240DPI.

I dont know what DPI it is printed at but its press printing...Its not the stuff of high quality.

I just love playing with the ISO on this bad boy... here's one I shot using ISO 10,000 and f/2.8 on my 85L. It's just sick how usable these images are.

Well I do not know the exact DPI either, but one of my favorites, "WATER" and their sister mag "FOAM", are noticeably better (higher Quality) than the average surf magazine. It is a quartery circulation of a higher cost so that is expected.

I guess my point is that with the 1D classic (4mp) you could not crop at all and try to run a full bleed in any of those mags. With the 1DII/III the cropping would still be fairly moderate if at all.

Tharmsen

I think you send your MK IV back for a refund and buy a new cap instead. The one on top is looking a bit worn.

And that chair looks armour.

This looks pretty darn good for ISO10000. Nice detail retention as well.
Can't wait to get mine. I am in the much dreaded "On vehicle for delivery" Fedex Tracking status.

Just get ready for some cat pics. Just an advanced warning...;)

I'll try to get in some street shooting later this week.

EDIT: Just as I typed it, I got an "delivered" email. Woo hoo! Too bad I am at work. :(
