EDIT: Just as I typed it, I got an "delivered" email. Woo hoo! Too bad I am at work. :(

So it is sitting on your front porch?!? ..until you get home? Wish I live a little closer to NY :)

You laugh now, that exact thing happened to me with a Mac Pro. My girlfriend came home 4 hours after it was delivered and wondered why there was a "box with a giant Computer picture on it out side our gate".

I had it delivered to my office actually so no worries!

Opened the box up just to get the battery charged so I can begin testing right away when I get home. The next 5 hours is going to be very freaking long!

The color aware focusing doesn't do anything as far as I can tell in terms of performance. The D3 has never been able to top the 1D3 or 1D4 in AF speed or accuracy. Every test I've seen shows the D3 playing second fiddle to the 1D.

Oh I think we know which out of the 1D3 and D3 has had the focus issues. To claim the 1D3 i more accurate than the D3 tells me your use of the D3 was very limited.

tharmsen wrote in post #9517728 (external link)
Keep in mind, the D3 only has 15 cross type sensors. The other 36 are horizontal line sensitive only... they are, in essence, similar to the outer points on the 5D2... and we all know how well they work. :) They don't work very well in low light or low contrast scenes.

Again, use the 5D II outer points alongside the D3 with outer points and there's no contest. The former is a focus and recompose camera, the latter certainly not. I'm able to use the very outer points, in conditions of ISO6400, f1.6 and 1/60s and it'll lock on all day long.

...The 1D3 has sufficient RAW processing power to mantain full operational AF speed in 45-point-Matrix mode, and basically smoke the D3.

And there has been repeatable and controlled evidence of this, for a LONG time (a whole bunch of cameras on this report with quite interesting results, to say the least):

Sadly not borne out in real world use though is it....;)

We are talking about the camera right Matt?;)

Yeah, what's worse, I have a 24-70L and 70-200L f2.8 IS sitting here waiting to be mounted and used on the MKIV.

But by the time I get out of the office, it will be dark outside.:(

I am curious about the cross head focus points.

If they are so great why didn't the MK 3 have as many and why does the D3/D3s focus so well without as many?

The perfect opportunity for some high-ISO and how-does-the-AF-work-in-darkness testing. ;)

Don't worry Nicksan the MK IV can focus in the dark - you just have to find something interesting to shoot. :D

...You better start digging (and quickly) for better answers or counter-examples, because your anecdotical and subjective "interpretations" of this subject are not going to help you, in any form or shape.

It seems pretty clear that the D3 would not hold a candle, in the context of the intense and deep scrutiny that the EOS 1D series has been through, lately.

Bon voyage,

Yes, let me see if I can find some third hand article alluded to on DP Review that I've never actually read. Golly, I hope I can find something as good as that as my evidence.

It's never needed to stand up to it, because it just worked from day one.

The 1D3 doesn't have 39 of them because, well... it's the same reason your Pentium 90 from 1999 doesn't have the same features as a i7 quad core processor from 2010. It's not like they've been sandbagging us on AF points all these years... technology makes improvements. The stuff they do today couldn't be done yesterday (for a reasonable cost).

As for the D3, it does pretty good but it can't match the capabilities of the 1D4 in AF.
