well I tried to play with ISO range but it is mostly a pain, it is faster to selec the proper ISO in that case, you loose the idea of "auto" :)

but you are right I should play with the speed range, I work with primes so that does not change a lot every second, then place a safety shift on speed, and see if that work !

thank you !

still I would love Canon to provide a simple way to do so ...

No need to set the ISO range, or use ISO safety shift with the IV. Safety shift was the best we had with the III, and 1/60 was the fastest we could set for minimum shutter speed.

To do what you want with the IV, just set the minimum shutter speed to 1/400th(or wherever). Use Av mode. Set to Auto ISO. Use EC as normal with Av. SS will not drop below 1/400th, and ISO will climb/fall as necessary. I have the shutter speed range in the My Menu section so I can quickly Enable it, and change the value depending on lenses or needs. I find this a very handy feature for shooting Av mode in changing light conditions.

AutoISO in M mode still serves no real purpose, especially with flash, IMO. Tv mode, auto-iso works just like ISO-Safety shift did with the III, which is just fine.

How is your new lens Zethar? Did you upgrade from the Mark I? How do you like the Mark II?

With my new 500!

Hey Paolo,

Fabulous capture of the juve BCNH.

I just picked up the lens a couple days ago and need to give it a good workout.

My initial impression is that it is at least as sharp as the MkI (I have a very sharp copy of the MkI that I am reluctant to get rid of) but I have noticed an increase in contrast in the images with the MkII.

I will give the AF performance a workout tonight shooting some hockey and report back.

When did you pick up the 500 and how can you possibly carry around the 500 with the 800? Let me know how it works out for you and perhaps I may be persuaded to pick one up as well.

All the Best.

Zeth

Zethar,

Thank you on the BCNH. :)

Interesting on the 70-200 II, something to think about.

I picked up the 500 late last June. It was supposed to be one of the long lens used by the press for the inauguration of the 15th President of the Philippines. Notice the press release (external link) not having any mention of the 500. ;)

I was looking for a lens that was long and light enough to be hand holdable with a 7D and maybe a 1.4x Extender. Something for long treks through the countryside a long range sports lens in the spirit of the 400/2.8 & 600.

I left the 800 at home, the place where I captured the BCNH, as it would be too long unless I used a 5D2 and I am trying my best to be more proficient it the 1D4. Until now I still treat the 1D4/7D as if they were a 40D/5D2.

If I were you I would wait for the refresh of that lens. CR mentioned it as imminent but I am betting availability will be late next year. Unless you have an urgent need for lighter long glass.

No regrets on the purchase though as I had need for one. bw!
