Hi

Sorry, that's just the actual camera manual. There's a pdf document that is all about setting up the af on the camera. It's quite a large document. There is a link somewhere on the thread.

Cheers

Thanks, Gary for the post. I just got my 1DIV. That should help me with my AF settings.

I've had two opportunities to try out my new 1D4, the first to shoot High School basketball and the second to shoot High School swimming.

Having never shot these types of events before, I now have a better appreciation for those great shots that I've seen posted here. Low light conditions are challenging, and I realize that I totally suck as a sports photographer ... but practice makes perfect ;)

My first "lesson learned" after the basketball shoot was to use the Auto ISO feature. For the swim meet I set a min shutter speed to 1/500, shot wide open (or close to it) and let the ISO fall where it may. From a quick look at the files, I was probably between ISO 2500 and 5000.

C&C welcome, I've got a lot to learn ...

Nice colors.. You can push that shutter speed up to 800 or so to get better water drops and stop motion. I've shot much higher iso with great results. center focus, points expanded. Lock on with the center in ai servo and follow. Looking good and yes practice.

Thanks Kurt, good advice !!

Looking through the images I can see where a little more "stop motion" would be preferred. I started with AI Servo, center focus only, then moved onto center focus + surrounding points ( C. Fn III - 8 set to "2" ) and seemed to get more in focus shots. I had set tracking sensitivity ( C. Fn III - 2 ) set to half way between slow and medium, but I'm thinking that "slow" would likely be preferred for a swim meet ?

I'm a little concerned about pushing ISO too far and getting noise in the face area, although Lightroom 3 seems to have reasonable noise reduction. How far have you pushed ISO and still been able to "clean up" afterward ?

Martino, If you are not cropping you can really push it to past 10,000 iso, as long as you have good exposure. Now, you can't blow a 10k iso up to a giant poster but after a little post work all that noise is just about gone. Sounds like you are on the right track. This is why you have the mark4, no way could you do what you are doing with a 7d, maybe a mark3? The high iso in the mark4 is incredible. It's all about practice and learning all the functions. I use the ring of fire (full auto focus) also for sports and set my tracking to slow. I like to get to my events early and experiment for a few minutes to get my settings for the avalible light..
