Why worry about 4000iso at 100% crop?

I'd say that would depend on how you intend to use the image; print large enough and it will show.

I have to shoot at high ISO (4000-6400) all the time for indoor sports in dark gyms. The noise is manageable for web pictures and small images in print but I occasionally get an order for something poster sized, and then the noise is a real issue.

Looks like color noise was removed. Check your conversion software to see if it has NR by default. Doesn't look bad for an iso4000 crop.

nothing removed at all

As other have asked why I'm concerned at a 100% crop - i'm not really - I was just asking if that amount of noise is "standard" at ISO4000 as I have nothing to compare it to for any potential camera issues

What converter are you using?

For instance, I use ACR and if I don't ever go into the NR tab, color noise NR is set at 25 by default so there's still some NR going on.

IMO, your crop looks devoid of any color noise, and even with the 1D4, that's not possible without NR.

Anyways, a moot point, since most of these converters remove color noise very well and what's important is the end product afterall.

Why wouldn't your ISO4000 noise level be "standard"?

Hi Nick

ACR - you are right about the color noise being removed

"Why wouldn't your ISO4000 noise level be "standard"?" - lie I said as I have nothing to compare noise levels too I was asking the question on the off chance that people though there was too much noise for example.

Seems fine to me, here is an ISO 4000 shot that seems to show the same level of noise.

I have no idea why the EXIF would show such a large number...

<Shrug>

I'm simply guessing, it's just measurement taken by one of the 45 focus points. Probably, this focus point has recorded data while focusing at infinity.

For those of you that shoot JPEG or even raw. What are you Setting for Image Quality? Like Faithful, Standar, Custom etc.

Those settings are for JPEG's only.. They do not affect RAW. I only shoot raw, but if I did jpeg I would experiment untill I get what I like.

They do if you use DPP and have the setting in properties/options turned on to honor the camera settings (like your NR values).

Don't the settings affect how your picture is rendered on the computer in the Library; not talking about in ACR.
