When I do my AF micro-adjustment outside in bright conditions I get one set of values that are between 0 and +8 for all lenses. When I do the same indoors about 6 stops darker, I get a completely different set of numbers from +12 to +20. Is there a reason for this or am I just doing it wrong?

What calibration chart are you using? Are you using Spider LensCal or Lens Align?

Shouldn't matter, but as many of us find out, depending on various situations, your MA value may not be appropriate. Different FL, different distance, etc. There shouldn't be that big a difference though, IMO.

I use the upc code on a magazine to focus with a tilted ruler beside to see front/back focus.

That may be part of the problem. I suggest you use a calibration devise so you have consistency in your tests. A calibration devise has the ruler set at the proper angle and makes it easy to align your camera perpendicular to the calibration chart. The devises mentioned above also clearly have a center point to focus on. Using a devise helps to ensure all your tests are the same and your camera is aligned properly. Using the above method should yield consistent results. This is the method I use and it has worked well for me.
