36 isn't low.

Not all Canon buyers hang out on this board. If we take not the total number (36) but the percentage (15%), then about 15% of the Canon buyers out there are looking to buy a new 1D Mark IV. That's a lot.

Yeah some of them actually take photos. ;)

I totally agree on that not all canon buyers are here, but less than 15% of this boards members will buy a 1D mk4. The poll asks who preordered a 1D so my guess it that is more like 0,01% of the board members, because most people with a xxD/xxxD/xxxxD will not even view the thread. If we assume 1/4of the board members are active that means a total of 56000 possible buyers. 2500 of those have viewed the thread. 38 of those will buy a mk4. That is 0.07% of the board members. And that number is obviously too high because of the nature of the question/poll.
My rough guess is that around 200 or so mk4's will end up on this board very shortly.

Just a calculation for fun. Not trying to argue :D

FWIW, a photographer who's skills I know to be solid has been using one up in Wisconsin and he posted some HS BBall shots that IIRC were at ISO 6400 in ambient only and while they're simply on Facebook (take that for what it's worth) they look very clean (but very flat due to the lighting in the gym.) One of the lenses he was using was the 85mm f/1.2 which we know isn't normally a "sports lens." He was getting SS's in the 1/1500 to 1/2500 range.

This gentleman is the Chief Photographer for the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) so he knows his chit.

Well, as they say, you can show just about anything with statistics. Or, rather, nothing. :)

Unless you know who the members here are, and know which of those answered the poll you don't really know anything other than that a certain percentage of those who answered the poll intend to buy this camera.

Given that POTN members probably mainly are entry-level/hobbyist photographers and that this camera also is much more expensive than we hoped for I'd say the number is actually higher than I would have expected.

I think that the wire services and newspapers will buy plenty of IV's. And I don't think they are represented much here. And there are international buyers that aren't here either. Methinks the IV is going to move in batches...and individuals who aren't connected with a business will get theirs last, imo.

Either Northlight or Canon Rumors recently posted that Canon have been pretty shocked by the high level of demand for the camera.. that says something.

Also, here are a few more samples.

Adobe Camera RAW for 1D Mark IV is now availabe. It is version 5.6 of ACR. It is in the Lightroom 2.6 update, and you can do an update in Photoshop to get ACR 5.6.

This is cool. :) I didn't expect ACR to be available for the 1D Mark IV until after it shipped. I had to wait awhile after getting the 40D and 50D before ACR became available for them.

That's a pretty big assumption, that xxxdD, xxxD and xxD won't even view the thread. I read all threads that relate to new releases. Why wouldn't someone read a 1D4 thread just because they own a 50D?

The poll doesn't have to sample the entire population of the board to be reflective of actual purchases. You could randomly sample 100 people on the board and get a pretty accurate sample. They do it in national elections all the time. :) 1000 people tell a country of 300 million people who their next President will be.

Stop arguing with me. :D

yep and that tells me it should have shipped a few weeks ago, and has been held back

I just talked to a sales rep who told me it would be January 20th before they receive their shipment from Canon. Their last correspondence from Canon was yesterday.

Just called my local Camera store retailer in Lexington, KY. I was told they had heard from the corporate office in Louisville and they are expecting a shipment on Monday to Louisville which means maybe some units to Lexington by Tuesday. At this point I don't know what to believe. Heck the ACR and LR update is available before the dang camera is available.

Well it definitely looks like some in the UK & USA will have theirs next week.

I don't get my redundancy cheque until the first week of Feb, so I'll be reading all the reports on it & keeping fingers crossed it's as good as it looks like it's going to be.

Mk IV and 300 2.8 IS here we come. Have to decide on the 100 2.8L IS Macro of 135L as well. My boys are getting me the CP-E4 power pack for Xmas as I've been a good boy this year:lol:

I'm not sure you'll need a speedlite at all with the 1D Mark IV. :)
