Looks ok to me. Could do with a bit of focus, but I know kids running around is hard to keep track of.

What level of noise reduction were you using?

Looks a little underexposed and OOF which is a recipe for noise.

I agree with Sir Flatulence here..... looks like you are at least 1-stop underexposed. We are typically concerned with exposure on the face for the important part of the shot, and here the meter was likely thrown off by the brighter background and her lighter shirt.

Yep, it's under exposed and need a level adjustment, which will increase your noise even more. Learn to expose correctly and your 7D will be just fine.

Even though it's underexposed that looks really bad to me--maybe 1600, not 400. I don't see that kind of noise when I underexpose at 400.

Why would one 7D produce a noisier image than another 7D??

Shoot RAW and join the HAMSTTR Breeders' Club: https://photography-on-the.net …=744235&highlight=hamsttr. That's the best way to reduce noise to the greatest extent possible.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

I'd like to see. Would you mind deliberately underexposing an ISO400 shot and post a link to the full-size image un-processed, un-retouched?

:D

As others have said, exposure makes a biiiig difference (and focus plays in too). I routinely set +2/3 EC on my 5D2, often increasing more in post, and the 7D I rented while Canon had the 5D2 for the *third* time wants the same. Dunno WTF Canon is thinking wrt their metering -- D700 is way more accurate. Shoot raw and you'll have headroom to adjust as desired.

1/200 is iffy with a moving kid, esp. on a cropper, though the girl probably isn't nearly as squirmy as my 12-mo. Which AF mode were you using?

Try microadjusting your lens - once you get a good method it's easy.

What's worked well for me is the method of placing something flat with good contrast (eg. a Peanuts holiday collection DVD box) parallel to the focal plane 3-4 feet away, and propping a rule up against it. Tripod the camera so that the lens axis is right about where the rule meets the front of the focus target, with maximum aperture and a high ISO to limit shutter. Aim at the target just to the side of the rule, set the timer, MF to infinity then AF and shoot. You'll see clearly where the camera is focusing on the rule and you can MA it forward/back appropriately. At close distances it should be roughly as blurred front/back. Neither the moire or inclined-rule-only methods worked well for me, but his is a cinch - you can review right on the camera after shooting, zoom in, adjust, repeat. Shallow angle on the rule helps with seeing the precise focus point.

Test at both extremes of your zoom, and a couple of points in the middle. With my 24-105 I did 24, 50, 70, 105.

That's rather impressive that your ISO1600 shots from your 50D would look that clean....better than my 5DMKII in fact.
