Here I am wondering how a 1 series two generations behind is going to perform AF wise and then I see this O_O

Nope, just saw tag and then the wallet. Definitely not today.

WELL if this is firmware ( AI Servo II AF algorithm )then we need it in the mk3 - then it will be how it was supose to be :)

Excellent article. The drool factor for sports is pretty high.

Let's just hope they got it right this time.

This is an interesting quote from that article...almost an admission of guilt regarding the MKIII in some respects............

In the past, Canon AF system development concentrated on achieving fast response. Highly responsive AF systems offer accurate predictive AF (they focus quickly on subjects in the AF frame), but they have difficulty stabilizing focus if the subject leaves the AF frame during AI Servo AF continuous shooting.
To enable instantaneous response to the subject's movement, the camera can now start predictive control with the measurements taken immediately after the subject starts to move. The success rates for focusing moving subjects and for subjects whose distance keeps changing, are substantially improved (above series captured in a 10 FPS burst).
The 1D Mark III, highly responsive by design, consequently has a lower probability of accurately focusing on fast-moving subjects that are hard to keep within the AF frame. With the new 1D Mark IV AI Servo II AF algorithm, stability, reliability, and AF precision have all been improved without a sacrifice in responsiveness. Predictive AF is more intelligent and avoids over-response, and difficult lighting – both low contrast and very bright conditions -- is handled better.

Yup, this is Déjà vu to me ~ it IS what they described the 1DMKIII to be. I've already bought this, or so I thought.

but it is a "combination of hardware and software (AI Servo II AF algorithm) improvements [that] enables a more stable AI Servo AF control"...

so 1dm3 owners are F'd.

Yeah, I'd say after all the recalls and firmware updates, Canon did everything they could to make the MKIII focus reliably. It was time to overhaul the hardware.

Hopefully they got it right this time.

This was what I was afraid of on the MKIII and why I never bought one even after the "fixes". IMHO, Canon bailed on the MKIII AF system and built a new one that does what it is supposed to and dubbed it an MKIV.

It took hardware & software changes far too intense to retrofit the MKIII.

Hopefully they can apply some of that technology to the MKIII via firmware.
