Any suggestions for a 270EX-sized manual flash for off camera strobist type photogrpahy? I currently have sunpak383+cybersync, but find the 383 too bulky (if coupled with a G series).

The 270EX would be perfect except it has no power adjustment. I guess I could use distance to adjust, but that gets cumbersome.

Ditto...If it's off-camera, who cares how bulky it is compared to the camera ;)

The P&S version of a single flash strobist setup.

For everyday/travel and the the occasional off camera flash. Trying to go minimum weight and still be able to do single strobe in a pinch. The 20d, 24-70, light stand, tripod, and 383 flash gets heavy for everyday walk-around.

Since size and power are kind of interrelated I'm not sure that anything too small would be sufficient power. However if that were my goal I would start looking at thrift shops and garage sales for old manual flashes from canon/vivitar/nikon from the 70s. They made some rather small featureless flashes that work in manual mode back then that were smaller form.

While it's probably not as small and light as you'd like, I'll suggest you look for a long discontinued Sunpak 322. They generally sell for peanuts on eBay (there's one listed now that's sitting at $6.99) and offer a very nice feature set. The 322 is an auto thyristor unit but its most appealing feature is variable power output which ranges from 1/1 to !/32.

Here's my old 322:

The flash head pulls out and swivels:

And it has a captive sync cord which is extremely handy:

And the back panel:

It's an all around great flash unit with lots of flexibility.

Thanks Dave. That looks pretty sweet. Once you go off camera strobe, you can't live without it, even on a P&S.

My thought on power is that a sunpak383's bulb and supporting circuitry (capacitor and a simple circuit) aren't that large. If swivel and cycle time can be sacrificed, then there's got to be smaller flashes with similar power.

You could trigger your 270EX manually (it will go full power) and then control exposure by setting your aperture on your G10 or moving the flash physically farther away. Or you could carry a longer ETTL cable to use it wired.
