I hope this is the correct section. I was not sure.

Basically, I was wondering if anyone had purchased/tried the new larger Amazon Kindle DX. I was specifically wondering how photography books looked on it. I am familiar with e-ink but wondered if something was lost when reading a photography book.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Actually, the Kindle is still the only device that will deliver my morning paper to me no matter where I am (beach, train, office, etc.) Books are great on several devices. However, the Kindle is the only product to receive newspapers and magazines as well!!!!!

I haven't tried the DX. I would think that any of the e-ink devices would be less than desirable to display photographs used in a book. I have heard that the DX is better suited than the original Kindle for things such as newspapers.

I certainly recognize that the loss of color is an issue. I am hoping someone has tried it and has some personal experiences to share. Time will tell....

I'm assuming that you have the regular Kindle. Have you tried downloading a sample of a photography book (assuming that there are any) to see how the photos display? I would think that something like a Lightroom book would work ok for screenshots and the like. Anything with color samples illustrating things like hue, saturation, contrast, etc are probably going to get lost in the e-ink translation.

I actually do NOT have a regular Kindle. I have played with one that someone at the pool had. I guess the answer is- it depends pon the book.
Hopefully the price will drop soon!

I have the Kindle DX and have downloaded / read several photography books on it. Briefly, it's good for text and fair for diagrams, but useless for photos. It only has 16-level grayscale pictures. I have a number of photography books on my Kindle, but have re-purchased two or three in hard-copy because being able to see colors or details in the illustrations was necessary.

That said, I really like the Kindle (I have the DX for technical books and the Kindle 2 for carrying around fiction, etc.), and for most purposes it is very handy - much better than carrying around a bookshelf when I go out ;)

Canon XSi, T2i, EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, 70-300mm f/4-5.6, 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, 100mm f/2, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, Kenko 1.5 TC

Thanks. That was exactly the details I was looking for.
On a seperate note, how are newspapers on the DX?

Depends on the newspaper - there are a variety available and they each seem to do their own formatting. Some, like the WSJ and Washington Post, are well formatted and even do a good job on pictures etc. Others, like my local Arizona Republic, omit all pictures, tables, and illustrations, and simply provide a basic section list and unformatted text. Even so, it's so convenient to have it automatically every morning I still subscribe.

Thanks for the info.
I now need to decide between Amazon's Kindle and the new B&N Nook!
