A Q3T contender? ~50g lighter but no tension control. Base diameter is smaller but it flares out considerably.

Looks good, but won't work with a traveler tripod like 1541T or Feisols...
Look here:

two knobs are exactly on the opposite sides of the base, with 3 legs folded around,
one leg will hit one of the knobs, I don't see how to go around this...

I'm just a caveman, but that huge "product photo" doesn't look very good. I hope they weren't using a BH-30 whilst taking that photo. :-)

Question: has anyone bought the new RRS ballhead BH-30 and tried it?

I am looking for a ball head for a Gitzo Traveller Tripod 1550T to use on long distance travel with 5DMK2. This BH-30 seems to be ideal even if it does not fold perfectly with Gitzo Traveller (will fold better than BH-40. I am a bit uncomfortable buying the Markins Q3T and then change the shoe to a RRS LR type and was uncomfortable using the BH-40 which is for heavier duty.

What's to be uncomfortable about...it's really pretty simple, considering that you should be able to buy the Q3T with or without the screw clamp (and without Loctite, to boot).

Nice. I will definitely be looking to replace my Q3 with the BH-30 on my travel tripod.

I actually asked RRS:

Will the BH-30 properly fold up on a Gitzo 1541t

...and the response I got back was:

The BH 30 is going to be a great pairing for the Traveler GT1541T. It has a 15lb load rating. It will be available Dec. 1st.

Sounds like the answer to my question (as expected) is no being it was not addressed, although I am sure it will indeed be a good pairing with the GT1541T as it is not like the Q3T properly folds up anyway. I'll probably pick one up.

So that means that it should take a gripped 7D + 70-200mm f/4L IS without problems, right? It should be about 4.2lb + the two LP-E6 batteries...
