Ok so im a college student who is writing a paper. I am writing about an event in history where the event had a large impact. I chose the switch from film to digital cameras to be my paper. I need people from both side to tell me what you guys think. I have to have this paper speak about two different sides of the argument (People who think it helped and people who miss the film days). If you say something good enough i will probably be using your quote in my paper just for a heads up. Dont want to get in trouble.

It's a big deal I guess, but this is like asking about the impact from the switch from antennas to satellite for televisions.
Just another way to show technological progress.

I think you made a poor choice of topic, at least from a historical standpoint. The switch from film to digital photography affects only a small percentage of the worlds population—those that take pictures.

Choosing an event with global implications would be more appropriate to the assignment. Why not write about the dropping of the first atomic bomb, the fall of the Soviet Union or World War I, just to mention a few?

And many of us still shoot with both. There is not a hard distinct date where digital basically killed the other. The invention of the telephone, airplane, transistor, atom bomb, mobile phone or such has a much greater impact to people and it's easier to nail a time where it wasn't, then it was.

Satellite? Maybe it's popular in your area, but where I am cable TV is still most popular and I get my TV signals over the airwaves!

I was paying $8.50 a month for "antenna service" i.e. local channels. (when I started getting it, internet through cable provider would be $10 more if you didn't have another service from said company so I was getting the antenna service for free). That isn't the case anymore, they raised the antenna service to $14.50 a month so I paid $85 for an antenna and digital converter box and I get better picture quality than when I got it through the cable! I don't understand people that are OK payhing $70 to $100 a month just to watch TV.

I agree with John,,totally insignificant.. Change from film to digital effects less than 1% of the worlds population..

What about Gutenberg's printing press?? The most significant invention ever..

You do something a bit more general like the impact of the digital sensor. That breakthough caused large advances in medicine, astronomy, law enforcement as well as photography and likely other areas of science and technology.

As long as we are judging:

I think once someone has made an adult decision to do something, the last thing you should do is hinder their motivation with your sidetracked input because that is not what they are asking for.

As a designer I can tell you that one of the worst things you can do is neglect/deny ideas. It is a regressive move.

He/she is writing the paper and found a topic. So be it.

To the OP: I would try to link the evolution of mediums (computer screens/internet/HD tv/ect) as into your paper. Because then you can prove that the evolution of the digital age (not just digital photography) is VERY HISTORIC... Look at how news papers are doing (INTERNET)
How are photojournalists fairing as a result...
The list goes on...

Has technology helped or hurt us in regards to how we view one another. It's now possible to watch three different networks and get the same story spun 3 different ways and may more around the world.

Well coming from film for many years I noticed a major impact on the film industry.Kodak a company who pioneered the industry no longer even sells it any longer. How about the impact on their stock. I am sure the photo developing industry has suffered greatly.

If you want the best invention ever..... it is by far the Stirrups It completely change mankind, and the middle ages forever. Or how about just the camera in general. I made it much easier and spread knowledge of places much faster and easier than ever before as compared with paintings or sculptures. Photographs have the power to start a war, or end one completely.
