kawter - 70-200 should be very sharp wide open, and a sample that I've had was as sharp as it gets at 3.5 and up...

But I would not hesitate to use it wide open if you want to blur the background.

Nice shots. She sure does look determined! I've got that lens as well, and don't hesitate to shoot at F2.8. It'll still be sharper than most consumer lenses at F8 (in my experience). I often do stop down a tad for shooting at close range though, as DOF is very thin for a portrait taken at about 12ft away.

The only reason you'd need to turn off your IS is that it eats battery like anything! I only use it when absolutely necessary. Then again, I am rather proud of my steady hand! (I can hand hold at 1.5 seconds.....*ahem* :P)

Just get a second battery and keep 'em charging in rotation! These are excellent.

Used this lens yesterday. 3200 ISO f/2.8
From the proper distance, it was sharp sharp sharp; albeit a tad noisy in the low light. Too close, and I had some DOF problems.
Frankly, I'm still learning the beast.
